Why Hire a DJ Who Is Also a Musician?

I have been a musician my entire life and hold a degree in Jazz Performance on the Double Bass. Over the years, I’ve played many styles of music and gained decades of experience in the music industry, including 12 years as a retail music store manager.

This experience has given me valuable insight into professional audio equipment—speakers, cables, lights, and instruments—as well as the brands that manufacture them. While studying for my degree, I explored and performed nearly every genre, from classical and world music to electronic and jazz.

The Evolution of DJ’ing

For years, musicians would joke about DJs, saying they just “push play” or simply layer beats over rap tracks. But fast forward to today, and DJs are more in demand than ever. With the ability to instantly play any song, DJs offer a level of flexibility that live music alone can’t always provide.

I started DJ’ing nearly 10 years ago, initially just for fun at the music store using turntables. The rise of streaming services was a game-changer—you no longer needed crates of records to DJ. The evolution of DJ equipment also played a huge role; turntables transformed into DJ controllers, which are now an instrument in their own right. These controllers allow DJs to add effects, manipulate rhythms, loop sections, and even isolate or remove vocal and drum tracks.

As a musician, I quickly picked up on these tools and began mixing. My background gave me an edge in understanding how to use professional-grade speakers, microphones, lights, and special effects—skills that can take years to develop.

Why Choose a DJ Who Is Also a Musician?

Many DJs get into the business because they love music. But starting with just a controller, without experience in setting up and optimizing sound systems, lighting, and microphones, can be both daunting and expensive. Musicians, on the other hand, already have a deep understanding of audio, making setup and troubleshooting second nature.

Another key factor is musical knowledge. Many DJs focus on specific genres like rap or EDM, which is great—but a musician brings a broader perspective. As a wedding and corporate DJ, I work with clients who often want a mix of genres, from classical and jazz to Celtic and rock. Understanding the history and structure of music allows me to curate a playlist that suits the event perfectly.

That said, I can still spin rap and EDM. I’ve studied and practiced these styles, and while I’d love to jump into a scratch battle someday, I recognize that true mastery comes with dedication.

The Bottom Line

A musician-turned-DJ brings valuable experience, technical expertise, and a deep appreciation for music to every event. Whether it’s a wedding, corporate gathering, or private party, having a DJ who understands both live performance and digital mixing ensures the best of both worlds.

Best DJ Ever?

What did the kids mean when they said, “You are the best DJ ever”?

This junior high crowd was blown away when I played ALL TEN PAGES of their special requests. Does that make me the best DJ ever? Not necessarily—but it does mean the kids had the best time because they got to hear the music they wanted, live on the spot.

Other DJs from “big companies” had disappointed them in the past, often refusing requests with excuses like “I don’t have that in my library.” That wasn’t the case here!

Highlights of the night included:
Cold Spark Machines – No one expected them, and when they went off, it felt like a real concert.
Glow sticks & light-up glasses – A must-have for an epic dance party!
Projector – Played music videos to go along with the songs.
Haze Machine – A subtle effect that enhanced the lighting.
Pro lighting setup – Big enough to fill an entire school auditorium.

The energy was high, the music was perfect, and the kids left with an unforgettable experience!

Streaming vs. Downloaded Library?

When booking a wedding or corporate DJ, ask yourself: Do they advertise having the biggest song library available? If so, that means they DEFINITELY DO NOT and can NOT play all requests.  There is no bigger catalog of music than the internet and streaming is the king for corporate and wedding DJ’s

A downloaded music library is the old way of DJing, suited for club DJs playing fixed one-hour sets without taking requests. In 2025, with 5G, a DJ playing for 4-6 hour sets stream from platforms like Tidal and Deezer, which provide high-quality audio designed for professional DJs.

What about Wi-Fi interruptions or blackouts?
A backup plan is essential. That’s why DJTFT has multiple streaming subscriptions. On New Year’s Eve 2024, when the Great Tidal Blackout hit and servers crashed due to overuse, I seamlessly switched to Deezer, and the party went off without a hitch.

No Wi-Fi? No problem.
I can DJ an entire night using just my phone’s 100GB data plan. In fact, I’ve successfully run full events using my personal hotspot.

What if the phone dies, Wi-Fi is down, and all streaming services are offline?
Even in a worst-case scenario, I carry a selection of downloaded tracks, including the most requested hits, to keep the party going.

With DJTFT, the music never stops
